Hedge planting in November 2011 with St. Augustine’s and Rose Wood Schools
The Friends of Fairy Dell have been successful in their application for a Community Tree Pack from the Woodland Trust to support the Jubilee Woods Project. Apparently the UK is one of the least wooded areas of Europe with just 11.8% woodland cover, compared with 44% for Europe as a whole. The Woodland Trust aims to double the native woodland cover and has already given 1,000 free tree packs to schools, youth groups and communities.
The Friends have had two planting sessions of their 240 trees and hedging when they were joined and helped by two local Primary Schools. – St Augustine’s and Rose Wood – both in Coulby Newham. The aim is to ‘gap up’ the hedge which was planted in October 2009 around the perimeter of Fairy Dell. The plants included hawthorn, birch, rowan, hazel and oak.

They were beautiful sunny days and everything was successfully planted.
A further batch of hedging plants and trees were received for Fairy Dell from the Woodland Trust in February 2012.
On Tuesday February 21st the year 5 pupils from Hemlington Hall Primary School came to Fairy Dell with Mr Martyn Walker and other school staff. They worked in Fairy Dell Park, gapping up one of the hedges. There were approximately 50 children and they planted about 250 plants between them.
